ART IN CRISIS – DIGITAL STORIES
EXHIBITION 12 JULY – 6 AUGUST
SCREENING 23 JULY, 12-8PM
We’re proud to present the outcomes of our outreach work with Crisis homeless charity, the UK national charity for single homeless people. The BOM Fellows have been collaborating over 10 weeks with Crisis members to produce digital stories using photography and sound to explore relationships with the urban environment.
Justin Wiggan, Dan Burwood and Pete Ashton all led sessions that explored the urban environment through photography and sound.
The work produced is shown as part of the Open Air Cinema at the Art in Crisis Festival and will be shown at BOM from 12 July to 6 August.
This project opens a window onto the work of artists experiencing homelessness. Using the city and their daily experiences of living rough as inspiration, this small exhibition gives a slice of personal stories and creative expressions of local people.
1. Printed image, film.
The exhibition features images that come from photo walks around Digbeth with artist Pete Ashton, where Crisis Birmingham is located. The group (made up of Fellows and Crisis members) explored the area with SLR cameras to tell the story of Digbeth through their eyes.
2. Film, sound.
Justin Wiggan used his project Life Echo (which will be presented at BOM in the coming months) to collaborate with the group. The film (created using their personalised Life Atlases) gives context to the process of Life Echo.
3. Printed image, digital image.
These images were created using several techniques including Instantish Photos (analogue photos developed there and then). This work was created with Dan Burwood.
Artists: Pete Ashton, Dan Burwood, John Chapman, Lee Foxall, Randy Henry, Louise Katsaris, Gareth McKeown, Alex Miles, Darran Vaughan, Justin Wiggan.
