Exhibition Preview. The Chemistry of Biology: An Alchemy of DNA.
October 11th 2017, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Join us to celebrate the opening of Anna’s new work; The Chemistry of Biology: An Alchemy of DNA.
We will have special DNA Cocktails, a conversation with artist Anna Dumitriu and her collaborator Dr Rob Neely as well as interactive demonstrations of the processes involved in her residency at University of Birmingham.
This exhibition explores the chemical nature of DNA, the enigmatic ‘instruction book of life’, which at its base is simply a concoction of phosphorus, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen and carbon. Referencing alchemical desires to ‘transmute’ matter into new forms, create panaceas to cure any disease, or to find the secret of immortality, artist Anna Dumitriu weaves together complex historical narratives with synthetic biology, DNA sequencing, and new super-resolution imaging technologies in an attempt to deconstruct what DNA is and what it means to us.
Anna Dumitriu is a British artist whose work fuses craft, technology and bioscience to explore our relationship to microbiology and emerging technologies. She has exhibited at venues including the Picasso Museum Barcelona, The Science Gallery Dublin, The Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, Waag Society Amsterdam, Art Laboratory Berlin and The V & A Museum. Her work is held in several public collections, including the Science Museum London and Eden Project. Anna has been collaborating with Dr Rob Neely from the University of Birmingham to explore how new chemical tools in biotechnology will have far reaching cultural and scientific implications for the future. Their collaboration has been funded by a Leverhulme Trust Artist in Residence Award.
Please note that this event will take place in our basement space which unfortunately is not currently accessible for those who use wheelchairs or have trouble with stairs. We are improving accessibility at BOM with plans in place to fit a lift in early 2018.
